As part of vessel classification, Bureau Veritas provides certification services for equipment and materials covered by classification rules, such as hull equipment and materials, welding consumables, propulsion engines and components, equipment for auxiliary, electrical and automation systems, lifting appliances, etc. Covered certification scheme, materials and equipment are described in Rule Notes NR 320 and NR 266 and in relevant classification rules such as rules for steel ships and for materials and welding.

 
As part of vessel certification to comply with flag state regulations, Bureau Veritas provides certification services for statutory items required to be approved by international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, and COLREGs conventions). For ships flying an EU member state flag, specific items must comply with the Marine Equipment Directive (MED).
Bureau Veritas is designated as a Notified Body by the French Administration to perform conformity assessment of marine equipment listed in this Directive, such as life-saving appliances, pollution prevention, fire safety and navigation equipment.

Bureau Veritas is an EU Recognised Organisation and may provide EU Mutual Recognition Type Approval services for the products covered by the Technical Requirements of the EU ROs Mutual Recognition Group. The certification scheme and the products covered are described in the Note NI 596. More details about the EU ROs Mutual Recognition may be consulted on the EU RO Mutual Recognition Group web site.

Third party certification services are provided by Bureau Veritas for marine materials and equipment that must meet the requirements of a specified recognized standard.

Bureau Veritas offers a wide range of solutions:

• Type approval

Submit technical documentation defining the type of product, agree on the test program to be performed and then, obtain your Type Approval Certificate.

• Product design assessment

This service consists of checking compliance with the specified design requirement through a technical review of documentation.

• Individual product manufacturing survey

We perform surveys during product manufacturing, which includes witnessing product testing.

• Work recognition

Upon request, manufacturing is assessed to check compliance with the minimum criteria laid down by Bureau Veritas Classification rules.
